Connection Captain - Jorge Ribeiro

What is happening in the book, I would connect to another book. I would connect to the Hunger Games, because in this Gulag, there are many different camps, and in the story it states how these camps each do different things, so I would connect to the Hunger Games, because it is separated into different districts, and each district is supposed to do something different, but on Shukov's camp, it is not the different laboring they do, but yes the way the prisoners are treated in those camps. On page 67 they are discussing on how their camp is much quieter, but the other prisoner says that he doesn't think it is quiet, because of the assassinations that occurred in the cells. This passage also shows that some camps are more violent than others, because of these assassinations in the camp, which means life is harder in some camps. This also connects to the Hunger Games, because life in some districts is harder than life in others, for example, life is harder in district 12 than in the Capital.

Another connection I have, is the book Maus, because on the story Vladek is caught and put in one of these concentration camps the Nazi's had, and Shukov was put in the Soviet concentration camp. Another connection would be that both Alexander (Author of One Day in the life of Ivan Denisovich) and Spielgman's father (Spielgman is the author of Maus) had personal experiences related, because Spielgman's father was called Vladek, so the main character of Maus is Spielgman's father, however in One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich, the author also had personal experience. The author of One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich, was arrested himself and put into a Gulag, but Vladek was also arrested, because he was a Jew, and because of this he was put in a Nazi concentration camp. So I connect both of the authors, of One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich, and Maus alike, because both got their information by personal experiences or by family members.

  1. Jorge, I really enjoyed to see that you connected "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" to two other books instead of one, and books with completely different storylines. I agree with you that the Gulags have many similarities with the districts in the book "The Hunger Games", however it might have more in common with the actual Hunger Games. For example, prisoners don't choose to go to Gulags, they are forced to, like in the Hunger Games. Also, every Hunger Games is styled differently, like the Gulags you mentioned. It also connects with the hardships for every districts, as some districts are trained more extensively than the richer ones. As for the second book/connection, though, I can't really say anything, as I didn't read anything about it. Overall, though, I thought your post was really good and liked how you connected to another book in the rotation list.

    1. I found the connection you did was very good, because some camps as well are harder than others, and there is the normal Hunger Games and something that is called Quarter Quell, and these camps would connect, because Hunger Games is for different people, but Quarter Quell is for experienced ones, people who have already won the Hunger Games, so I would also compare the games in the book, to the difficulty it had in the different Gulag labor camps.

  2. I felt that your connections to to the hunger games realy was a strong connection to where they get "captured and then taken to a prison of the sort against their will. I also thought that the factions also symbolized the the gulags because there was hunger and pain and cold and almost like a replica of the factions.in the hunger games
