Question Commander - Caroline Lopes - Blog Post #4

Question #1: Why do they treat people bad in the camp even if all of the same position or situation?
For example on pg.114 their is an example of people in the camp calling other people names. I think that a big part of the campers treating other people bad is a little bit the fact that they are being treat badly also because they are frustrated with the fact that their is a war going on outside their camp and they had to leave their family and friends to go to this camp so they can’t protect any one.
Question #2: What do the think of world war 2 in other words and they conscious of WW2? How much are they involved in world war 2?
I think they are a little bit worried because of the world war 2. But because their was no technology in the time, news didn't pass so fast like today so it was hard communicating specially in camps. So that made them not really conscious of the WW2  and it made them not know much about not only the war and also their families.
Question #3: Can the prisoners leave the camp when their  done with their job or if they are respecting people without running away?
The camp is not so much for job or fun. I think that it is more of a ‘punishment’ camp for prisoners and because their are in the middle of a war the more people they can get to organize the camp better. So, I think they are just going to keep working and they don’t have a date to  leave the camp.

Images:
I think that this picture is really meaningful because it shows that the prisoners are locked with no exit and it gives the felling that you are closed in a cage and you don’t have any freedom because the wires are preventing you from ‘flying’.

The second image is basically people working on snow storm days and it shows that they don’t have many option either staying in the camp and work their best.

  1. Caroline great post!
I think that you had excellent questions. For me the one that I found particularly interesting is the third one which asks Can the prisoners leave the camp when their done with their job or if they are respecting people without running away?

I think that the prisoners can only leave the camp when they finish their time assigned. For example, Ivan got sentenced of 10 years in the gulag. I think that he can only leave after those 10 years end. I don't think that if he did his job he would be able to leave earlier. Maybe he would have to leave after those 10 years because he did not behave or do his tasks like he was suppose to do. I think that any prisoners is able to leave before his sentence finishes.

  2. Caroline,

Good questions, but sometimes I would get confused with the concept. Still, after reading your questions, the first one came to my mind.

You said that the people were treated horribly because of a war going outside the camp, making all prisoners and authorities frustrated.

In my opinion, I disagree with your thought. To begin with, the prisoners were treated terribly, even before the war went on. Since the prisoners are in a Gulag, it has to mean that they are treated badly. The reason being is because the Gulag is concentrated to be strict, because it has to teach prisoners not to do their same mistake again. Adding on, strictness actually helps a prisoner learn, since it creates intimidation inside them, meaning that the prisoner will not like to the same mistake again, because he doesn't want to get granted more years at the Gulag.

Another reason I disagree with your thought is because of the prisoner's work. Prisoners have to bare hours of cold weather piercing through their bodies, meaning that the prisoners will get angry because of weather stopping them from working. The reason they get angry for getting interrupted by the weather while working is because of the outcome. If the prisoners do not complete their work, they have to miss dinner, just so he can complete his work. Adding on, this will create angriness, since they can't eat their dinner. With this angriness, they are going to show it to everyone else, forcing the authorities to treat them badly. To conclude with this idea, the prisoners will get angry because of the weather interrupting them on working, and not because of a war happening outside of the Gulag.

A question I had after answering this idea was, do you think people are treated badly because of wars? The reason I ask this is because you said that the prisoners get angry because of wars, but I don't understand why? Is it because of the outcome it has after it finishes?

Overall, your question made me think to find a solution, since I disagreed with your thought.

    Daniel
