Line Illuminator - Juliana Regen

Book: One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
Author: Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
Week 5: pages 134 to 167

First quote:

''His fingers were wonderfully nimble, and his mind raced ahead, planning his next moves.'' (pg 134)

The significance of it is that its one of the best characterization of Shukhov in the whole novel. During most of the book, there is less descriptions about the characters and more about what happens. Shukhov is like a chess player, always thinking before his next ''move'' in order for good strategy. I chose this quote because the rule of three stood out to me and because I could finally learn something from the main character of the novel.

Shukhov as the player wisely deciding his move.

Second quote:

''After nineteen years inside, the foreman wouldn't hustle his men out a minute too early. When he said "Out," you knew there was nothing else for it.'' (pg 140)

The significance of this quote is that it represents a theme of family in the book. The foreman of Gang 104 is the speaker in the quote. He is like the father of the group. I chose this quote because it made me think of how none of the prisoners and soldiers in the camps have families, and their ''father'' while they are away from their families is the gang's foreman. It made me think about the theme of family in the book.
