Connection Captain ( Role I ) - Juan Carlos Thomas

After reading the first few pages of the book , I made some connections. One connection that I made was when Ivan woke up and noticed he had a fever. In our daily life many people , kids and adults get sick everyday. Sometimes the sickness can be very serious , that can prevent you from going to school or even to go to work. In this case , Ivan's fever wasn't that serious and he still had to work.

Another connection I made was when the author mentioned the gang's bread ratio had been shortchanged and that there will not be the amount of bread they normally have. This reminded me of Africa. Many countries in Africa do not have access to normal amounts of food. They lack a high amount of water and food. The worst part is that everyday they have few amount of food. The difference is that in the book , the gang normally has a decent amount of food. Many countries in Africa have a big food crisis.

Another connection I made was the weather.  In the book it says it is winter time in Russia. Right now , in Sao Paulo it is also winter. There has been some very cold days here in Sao Paulo. But in Russia , it is much colder. The book mentions that the temperature is seventeen degrees below zero! I can't imagine myself being in a place that cold , since I have never been in one.

The final connection I made was when I found out the book took place in Russia. The first thing that came to my mind was the Russia-Ukraine crisis going on. Russia and Ukraine are having territorial disputes and this might lead to war. Russia recently claimed Crimea , Russian territory. If nothing settles something Russia and Ukraine might end up in war in no time.

  1. you could have also connected some dads who work hard even if they are sick. My father had a fever which wasn't serious but he worked hard

    1. Nico , even though Ivan had a fever , he still had to go to work. A serious fever would prevent you from working. I have read the book "Holes"and do think it is similar to this book. The characters have few food and too much work. World War II concentration camps are also relatable to this book. Horrible and miserable camps.

    2. Juho , I do agree , sometimes people do work hard even with a sickness , but I think its better to rest when you have a sickness. Resting might help get better. When going to work with a sickness you take the risk of getting worse.

    3. Nico, it is very interesting how you brought up the book Holes. I also find it quite similar. In One Day, men that committed crimes have to work hard in cold conditions but in Holes, teenagers our age have to dig holes in a very hot environment. Do you guys think that both stories will have the same theme? Maybe the authors are trying to tell us the same message.

    4. Juan, But in gulag camps many people had to work hard even if they were sick. I think if people rested they were considered lucky because sometimes they had to work more. Even with bad conditions and harsh weathers many people have died due to it and stalin didn't care. So it was a good connection, but I consider him lucky.
