Connection Captain: Cian Miron: Week #1

Within the first segment of the book I was able to connect this book the Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. What connected this novel was the setting. Both books take place in a prison. Unbroken first begins away from a prison but after the first half he is placed in a brutal prison in which he is forced to work. As we can clearly see our book starts in a prison. We know this from the numbers that are placed on their back and the clear lack or freedom, both of these things commonly found in a prison. The novels connect in that way and in the stress that the prisons are not normal prisons. In Unbroken the main charter is placed in a Japanese labor prison camp during World War II. This prison camp is not a normal prison due to the forced labor and the lack of food and supplies. In our book we can clearly see that the prison is not normal at all. We know this from the forced labor, the lack of food and supplies, and finally this quote, "this "special" (forced labor) camp," meaning it is an abnormals camp.

This book connects to slavery and the practice of slavery. Slavery is taking a humans freedom and forcing a human to do physical labor with no reward. This is the whole idea of the prison camp in the book.  First, it is a prison and a prison takes away the freedom of it captives. Second, it is a forced labor camp that means prisoners are forced to do physical labor with no reward. As you can clearly see what slavery is, connects directly to the book's forced labor prison. So the next time the camp is referred to as a forced labor camp remember it is only a fancy name for slave camp.

  1. Cian,

Great job on your post. In my opinion, your connection is very detailed which helps the author better understand your comparison between the two books. Also your images goes along with your writing and they help the reader to better visualize. Which one of the two books did you prefer reading?

  2. Cian,
Good post and I found your connections very interesting. When they talked about the slaves I think that they might have even had it better because, they were not in below negative temperatures and if they worked well they were able to earn more food if they had worked hard. Unlike them the prisoners had to work in freezing weather and they had fixed meals, meaning that they couldn't earn more food with more work.
