Connection Captain - Rotation #1 - Chloé C.

When I started reading the first pages of this book I noticed that it talked about the prison like place in which Ivan was living in during the story. As soon as I noticed that I managed to connect to a book called "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" in which the boy's family has to move to a concentration camp. I think this books sort of connect because Ivan is forced to live in a camp, just like the jews had to in "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas". I also managed to connect to this book because in both of the books the characters were tortured in some way, in "One Day in the Life" the characters were tortured when they did things against the rules like waking up by the time the reveille, and in "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" they were tortured just by being jews, and sometimes they weren't even tortured they were killed.

I chose this picture because it is the cover of the book "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas", a book in which I made a connection to.

Another connection that I made was to the slaves in Brazil in the beggining of the XIX century. The people in this books were treated like slaves, they received a harsh punishment when they broke the rules, like I said in my previous connection. Just like in the book, slaves were forced to go somewhere else and work, all against their will. Plus, if they didn't give themselves 100% during work they would receive a harsh punishment just like in "One Day in the Life".

I chose this image because it represents 5 slaves who are working against their will for some rich family.

  1. Chloé, I agree with your first connection. I also thought of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas after reading the first section of this book. I saw some of the movie for that book and I think that in the camp that Ivan is in, they aren't as harsh, or at least not with him. Do you think further in the book the guards will be more rigorous? I like your second connection, I hadn't thought about the slavery in Brazil. Even though it doesn't have to do with camps, I can see why you remembered it. Also, your images are nice and it's good how you told us why you chose them.

  2. Chloé,

I think what you connected the book to was very interesting because you definitely gave good examples of the similarities.

Even though I did not read "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" I can clearly see you understood the concept of the story.

For the slavery part, I do not agree with you because in the book, the prisoners were sent to prison for the crime they committed, but for the African slaves, their slavery was not based upon a previous action, it was simply based on the traffic of slaves during this period of time.

    Thank you,
    Julia
