Line Illuminator - Jessica

"The men of the 82nd, who'd been digging those holes half a day without a chance of getting warm, had been the first to get in after the whistle; now even after they'd finished eating they didn't leave. Where else could they warm up? The sweating fell off them like water off a duck's  back - it was so much more comfortable here than in the cold." (pg.71)

This quote is saying that there were a lot of men who had to dig holes all day in the freezing cold. When it was finally time for dinner, they were the first ones inside. This quote shows that the prisoners had to work in really cold weather. Earlier in the book it said "the temperature out there was -17 degrees" (pg. 23) They had to work in -17 degree weather! I think that is crazy.  I think this book is in celsius, but I'm not sure. If it is, that would be about 1 degree fahrenheit. When I was in living in The States we wouldn't have school if it was around 1 degrees. It was to cold to stand outside at the bus stop. The prisoners had to work all day long in that kind of weather, the only time they got warmth was when they were eating. Even then, I'm sure it wasn't a heated room like we have now. In addition to that, I don't think the place they sleep in has any heat either.

"If we have to work faster then let's work faster. Anything you say." (Pg. 95)

This person who says this quote seems like a good person. It seems like he is trying to have a good attitude and not let their working conditions, and the that fact they are all "prisoners" get him down. I also think he is trying to get the job done fast. He does what he needs to do to get the job done. Those types of people can be helpful in certain situations. Saying that in the conditions they are working in is probably difficult. If saying it is hard, doing it is even harder. Right after this quote was another one where a man thought "Thank God for the man who does his job and keeps his mouth shut!" (Pg. 95) This quote shows that there are a lot of people who don't want to do these jobs and are complaining all the time. That would probably be me. I would probably complain a lot if I had to work in the freezing cold in a prisoner camp when I didn't do anything wrong.
